  • text adaptation by Eugene Field (1850-1895)
  • During my last year of teaching, I had a well-balanced group of students in the Chamber Singers ensemble at Gateway Academy. Because of their enthusiasm for singing, I was compelled to compose a piece for them. I came across and an adaptation of Psalm 23 by the well-known poet, St. Louis native, Eugene Field (1850-1895). As most of us well know, the text is rich with imagery and character. The words were set into five verses. Stanzas one and two create a pastoral picture of the Lord as shepherd. Verse three evokes the darkness of the text as does the beginning of stanza four. However, the mood shifts back to the original tonality for the triumphant final verse.
