- When the second year of the Lutheran Church Composer-in-Residence Program began, Pastor Linda Daniels-Block challenged me to compose a handful of "Jesus Loves Me" type songs. The goal was to merge newly-written text with music that will be sung by children and adults alike for years to come. "Jesus Is My Shepherd," text by Kathryn Spomer Crumrine, was the first song completed. An idea for “beefing up” each of the songs came about after the second tune was finished. Once a song is complete, I set the music in a variety of idioms to be used within worship. "Jesus Is My Shepherd" and "Jesus Is My Savior" have already been arranged as lead sheets, for handbells, for SAB choir, and for solo piano. Needless to say, the direction of this project has taken a rather delightful turn.
